The following is excerpts from my journal from my most recent trip to see the girls of STEPS Home in India.
July 27 –
While the other team plus Mike traveled to Changlepettu to visit the leper colony, Theresa and I stayed back. We went to the office first to a few things for Isaac. At lunch we headed back to the house. We organized what we needed for the afternoon photo shoot with the girls – we laid out all of the new dresses and hair bows. Since the girls we napping, we also spent some time decorating the new backpacks we brought the girls.
Once they woke up, Vanija sent them upstairs to us two at a time. We let them pick out a new dress, put a new bow or flower in their hair, and then took their pictures. The girls were so cute; they loved picking out their new dress. Plus, we have many more dresses, so Vanija can pass out the rest as needed.
These thoughts are excerpts from my journal from my trip to India:
Today we went to the office with Isaac and we were introduced to his staff. Besides running the orphanage, Isaac and Tara run Freedom in Christ, India, as well as Sitara Music which is the largest distributor of Christian music in India. After we were all introduced, we sang a few worship songs together, then Travis shared what was on his heart from 1 Kings 18. He posed the questions: What gets us excited? What makes us jump up and outrun a chariot?
For lunch Isaac took us to Don PePe’s… yep, Mexican. So now I have had Chinese food in Mexico and Mexican food in India. It was good, but a bit spicy.
We spent some time in a brainstorming session with Isaac after lunch when I heard the girls arrive outside. I headed out and got attacked with hugs – they almost knocked me to the ground! 🙂 I was playing with them when the new bus arrived. It is a 24-seater, so they will have room to grow into it yet. The girls were so excited! We had a ribbon cutting ceremony and we prayed over the bus. Then a few of us got on the bus with the girls and we went for a ride around the block. The bus will be registered in a few days and then they will be able to use it to go to school, instead of being packed too tightly into that little van.
Merry Christmas everyone!
I came to the quick realization today that it is already the 22nd! Where did December go? It seems to always have a way of flying by, but it went by especially fast for me since I spent the first 10 days in India, then the last two weeks recovering from the jet lag!
I will be traveling home to IL tomorrow for my Christmas break. I hope to get to see some of you along the way. I am praying that everyone has a safe and joyful Christmas season as you celebrate Jesus with family and friends.
Last weekend, I attended my church’s first adoption conference and got the opportunity to set up some information about STEPS. I spent a lot of time working on getting the display ready during the week leading up to the event.
The girls of STEPS can be sponsored for $30 a month, and we need 10 sponsors per girl to help meet all of their needs. So I made little buckets that hold ten pictures of each of the girls. On the front is their picutre and name, on the back is their birthday and story of how they came to STEPS. Then when someone sponsors one of the girls, they get to take one of the pictures with them.
