India, Day 4 – Church, Rules of the Road, Indian Ocean

These thoughts are excerpts from my journal from my trip to India:

December 4

This morning we got up early for church. We left the house by 7:45am. I got to ride with the girls in the van – oh, were they excited! Well, I was excited to ride with them, too. On the way to church we passed a store that had some Christmas decorations out, and they had a big tree out front… the girls saw it and went nuts! I guess we just get so used to seeing Christmas decorations everywhere this time of year that it doesn’t affect us as much. But when you live in a nation that is only about 5% Christian, Christmas decorations are few and far between. But their joy in seeing the tree was just too precious. “Akka, look! A Christmas tree, Akka! Did you see it, Akka?” Such contagious joy!

In church I sat with them, too. They were so well-behaved and quiet. But after about 40 minutes they left for Sunday school. I was rather sad to see them go.

India, Day 3 – Meeting the Girls!

These thoughts are excerpts from my journal from my trip to India:

December 3… after sunrise

I might have fallen asleep at 4am… it is now 7:15am and I am ready to go! Myself, the 3 guys from Kansas (Aaron, Travis, and Ben), and Isaac’s nephew (Rohan) are all staying on the second floor of the orphanage. The others are in Isaac’s house, just a couple of lots away. I haven’t heard the guys make a peep yet. The doors to the second floor are all still locked, so I know that no one else has been moving about yet. The ceiling fan is so noisy that I don’t hear the girls downstairs, so I can’t tell if they are up yet.

My throat really hurts this morning. I could feel myself catching a cold on the plane, but I was hoping that some sleep would help me feel better. Jesus, I need your healing. Touch me today!

I can no longer wait to meet those girls. I guess I will head downstairs!

India, Days 1&2 (and the wee hours of the 3rd) – Traveling

These thoughts are excerpts from my journal from my trip to India:

December 1

Sitting in the airport, I began to get butterflies in my stomach. Not from being nervous – I think it was pure excitement! Now that I got on the plane, they’re gone. I shot a quick email off to the Tolars about the potential problem getting my boarding pass once I reach Chicago. The ticket lady couldn’t check me in on the rest of my flights, only the first leg, for some reason. But I have my prayer team alerted, so I am not worried.

The wait at O’Hare was long, but eventually I found the team from Kansas. It was nice to have some company in the airport. Sadly, I didn’t get to sit by any of them on the flight to Germany though. But I did get to sit by a nice Christian man.

On the flight, I attempted to sleep, but it did not happen. I spent time instead praying on the armor of God and asking Him to surround me with His angels. I knew I needed the extra protection since I was getting tired – I could feel myself getting cranky on the plane and that is a sure sign of exhaustion.

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas everyone!

I came to the quick realization today that it is already the 22nd! Where did December go? It seems to always have a way of flying by, but it went by especially fast for me since I spent the first 10 days in India, then the last two weeks recovering from the jet lag!

I will be traveling home to IL tomorrow for my Christmas break. I hope to get to see some of you along the way. I am praying that everyone has a safe and joyful Christmas season as you celebrate Jesus with family and friends.

August 2011 Ministry Update

Can you believe that August is over? Before we know it, the crispness will return to the air and we’ll be full-swing into autumn. This summer has been an amazing one though. God has been so kind. Read all about it below.

March 2011 Ministry Update

Happy spring! I hope that March entered like a lamb and left like a lamb for you. I love the newness of spring – it reminds me of how Jesus takes the dry, broken places in our lives and makes something beautiful out of it, like a well-watered garden. Here is my update for March (click on the picture to enlarge it for easier reading): (more…)

Each month I send out an update to those who support me and pray for me. At the (brilliant) request of a friend, I will start posting my monthly newsletter here. It may be rather small to read, but if you click on it, it will enlarge the picture in a new window and you should be able to read it from there. If you have any trouble, let me know. Or I can email it to you each month at your request.   (more…)
