Straws and Cupcake Papers

Lately I have seen two separate concepts floating around on the internet. One, to keep your straw in your soft drink (pop), turn the tab around and insert the straw through the hole. This prevents the straw from popping out of the can every few seconds.

Two, to keep your drink bug-free, (more…)

How To Survive Really Long Flights

I’ve flown quite a bit… most recently to India and Israel. Those are no short trips, either! Flying to India (from Tennessee) usually involves 4 airports, 3 flights, 10.5 time zones, and just under 30 hours of travel time from start to finish. Those trips make me really appreciate in-country flights!

From the traveling I’ve done, I’ve picked up some tips and tricks that help out on those overseas flights. Obviously, you will probably end up talking to someone sitting near you for a while, but you can only talk for so much of an 8+ hour flight. So here is what I do to keep my sanity on those lengthy flights:

1. Happy Snacks. Never underestimate the power of a little snack on a long trip. Sure, they feed you some on the planes, but the food doesn’t always smell good (or taste good!), or you’re stuck in an airport for 5 hours… or let’s face it, you can feel your blood sugar dropping and your mood right along with it. I find if I am starting to feel crabby for no reason whatsoever, a Happy Snack fixes that quickly. This is also great when you are in a foreign country and just need something familiar in your tummy. Some of my favorite things to take in my Happy Snack stash include:

  • Fruit Leathers
  • Trail Mix
  • Granola Bars
  • Licorice or some other type of candy

(Hint: Target has some really great fruit leathers and trail mix – lots of great flavors and variety. That’s where I go to get mine… like this bag of trail mix.)  (more…)

Lunch Notes

For the past week on my facebook feed, I have been seeing so many First-Day-of-School pictures. I remember the excitement of wearing my new outfit, with a new backpack full of new school supplies (especially that box of brand new crayons!), and getting ready to go into my new classroom. I was one of those kids that genuinely loved going to school.

One of my favorite things about school was the anticipation of opening my lunchbox. I usually knew what kind of sandwich I would be getting, since my mom always asked me what I wanted. Butter, peanut butter, and homemade pickle slices was one of my favorites. Don’t judge if you haven’t tried it! It was amazing!

Octo-dog

I love summer foods, especially picnic food! As a kid, I especially loved hot dogs. Now that I’m older and sometimes in the care of other’s children, I’m always looking for something fun that kids will actually enjoy eating. (I like to be the “cool” babysitter!)

So one time I stumbled across this really great idea for hot dogs. With a knife, you slice straight down into the hot dog, about half-way down. You make 4 cuts, which will create the 8 legs. If you want to get fancy, you can carve out little eyes and a mouth on each of them. (more…)

Uses for Vinegar

I read an article this morning on yahoo.com that gave 20 unusual uses for vinegar. There were a few I had never heard of that I may have to try, such as:

3. Removeunderarm stains
Unsightly sweat stains can really ruin an otherwise beautiful blouse. Ironically, if you use aluminum-based antiperspirants, they’re even more likely to appear, thanks to a reaction between aluminum compounds in these products and salts in your sweat. Spray full-strength white vinegar on the stain before washing, and it will disappear.

6. Deterants
Got trails of tiny ants weaving their way around your home? These annoying insects aren’t big fans of vinegar, so spraying a 50/50 mixture of white vinegar and water anywhere you have seen them can help encourage them to move out. The vinegar also erases the scent trails that they use to indicate sources of food to their brethren. (more…)

Microwave It!

Brown sugar too lumpy? Honey crystalized? Need to disinfect your cutting board or sponge? Apparently a little time in the microwave can solve these kitchen woes! I read this article today on Yahoo! News about 15 microwave tips and found it very informative.

I may just have to try their applesauce recipe! (more…)
