Isaiah 9:6-7 – 6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.
Traditionally, I’ve heard this passage read at Christmas, as a promise of the gift of baby Jesus. But after reading this familiar passage today, I see another promise that God has given to His people: the promise of Jesus’ earthly reign.
With the elections only a day behind us this passage takes on even more significance. While I am thankful that I live in the United States and have the freedom to vote, the system is not without its flaws. As much as we want our candidate to be able to fix all of the US’s problems, they are only people. And when you put so many people in governmental positions, they are bound to not agree about many things. Then the issues that we want to see resolved or addressed end up getting stuck in one branch of government or another, and occasionally get passed.
Now don’t get me wrong – we definitely need a system of checks and balances for a democracy to work. But I believe that sometimes Americans put too much faith in their candidate. Unfortunately, no form of government will ever be perfect. Not until Christ comes back for His Bride (the Church) and sets up His rule on earth. And as Christians we can look forward to that day with great joy! He will bring the most perfect form of government to the earth. He will bring justice and peace and righteousness. There will be no evil, nothing to fear. Revelation 21:25 says, “On no day will its (the city’s) gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there.”
So in spite of which candidates were or were not elected, we have a promise of a perfect government to come. And that makes me so thankful that I am a child of God!
