Musings from a promise-collector

Feed the hungry for free!

All throughout the Bible we see commands to feed the hungry around us. But it is such a large problem in our world, so where do you start? If you’re like me, you wish you could do more to help the needy and hungry, but aren’t sure how. Or, don’t have the resources you’d like to do the things you wish. Well, you can feed the hungry for free – it only takes a little brain power!

There is a wonderful website that I stumbled across a while back that increases your brain power, and rewards you for answering correctly by feeding hungry people around the world. As you answer correctly, it also increases the level that you are working at. You can choose between different subjects such as vocabulary (which it is defaulted to start at), math, languages, art, grammar, geography, etc. The website is called Free Rice (www.freerice.com).

Each question you answer correctly, you earn 10 grains of rice that appear in a bowl on the right side of the screen. As the bowl fills, it translates into piles next to the bowl. They also keep a tally of grains of rice earned under the bowl. How do they pay for this rice, you ask? The website has sponsors which purchase banner space on the website, which pays for the rice that gets shipped all over the world. For example, after the devastating earthquake in Haiti, they were shipping much of their rice there to the effected areas.

I used this website as filler time quite a bit in the classroom when I substitute taught – it worked great with the SmartBoards that were in most of the classrooms. The students loved being able to see what they had earned, knowing that they were helping hungry people. (Teachers, it is a great resource!)

I encourage you to check out the website, and see just how much rice you can earn in a visit! Then challenge your friends and family to beat your rice score!
